OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a new AI tool that can generate music from simple text and audio prompts. According to a new report from The Information, the company is even working with students from the prestigious Juilliard School to help train the new AI.

The goal is to create a tool that can automatically generate a guitar track to accompany a singer’s vocals or create a custom soundtrack for a video. It’s not clear how far along the project is. Still, sources told The Information that OpenAI has enlisted Juilliard students to help annotate musical scores, a key step in creating the AI’s training data.

This isn’t OpenAI’s first foray into music generation. Still, it’s a clear sign that the company is taking the technology seriously. It’s a space that’s getting increasingly crowded, with startups like Suno and ElevenLabs already launching their own impressive music-generating AIs.

The rise of AI music has been a mixed bag so far. While the technology has significant creative potential, it’s also led to a flood of AI-generated “spam” on streaming platforms and several high-profile controversies. Now, with the biggest name in AI reportedly jumping into the ring, the world of music is about to get a lot more interesting.
