OpenAI is reportedly jumping into the social media game with a new standalone app that “closely resembles” TikTok. The twist? The app will only feature AI-generated videos, with no way for users to upload their own content from their phones. The new app, first reported by Wired, will be powered by the company’s upcoming and highly anticipated Sora 2 video model.
The app will feature a familiar vertical video feed and swipe-to-scroll navigation, just like TikTok. However, OpenAI will limit the AI-generated clips to just 10 seconds or shorter, a major difference from TikTok’s current 10-minute limit.
One of the more interesting features is an identity verification tool. If you choose to use it, the Sora 2 AI will be able to use your face in the videos it creates. This also means that other users will be able to tag you and use your likeness in their own AI-generated videos, although you will receive a notification every time this happens.
When it comes to safety, the software reportedly refuses to generate certain videos due to copyright restrictions. However, it’s unclear how robust these protections will be.
So why is OpenAI, a company focused on AI research, suddenly interested in social media? Wired suggests that the company sees a significant opportunity, as TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain. By building a social community around its powerful Sora model, OpenAI could also make it harder for people to switch to rival AI video generators in the future.
