OpenAI has not met its goals for new users and revenue in recent months, leading to concerns among some company leaders. They worry about whether the company can afford its huge data-center spending, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

CFO Sarah Friar has reportedly expressed worries to other company leaders that the creator of ChatGPT might not be able to pay for future computing contracts if its revenue doesn’t grow fast enough. OpenAI missed several monthly revenue targets earlier this year, according to the report. This happened after it lost market share to competitor Anthropic in areas like coding and enterprise services.

In a joint emailed statement, CEO and co-founder Sam Altman and Friar dismissed the concerns, saying: “This is ridiculous. We are totally aligned on buying as much compute as we can and working hard on it together every day.”

The WSJ report also stated that ChatGPT’s growth slowed towards the end of last year. OpenAI reportedly missed an internal goal to reach 1 billion weekly active users for the artificial intelligence chatbot by the end of the year.

The company has also had to deal with subscribers leaving, the report added. These challenges highlight the intense competition in the AI market and the high costs associated with developing and running advanced AI models. The need for vast data center resources to power these AI operations means that consistent and rapid revenue growth is crucial for companies like OpenAI.
