Millions of users across the globe faced a digital blackout on Friday morning, June 12, 2026, as Meta’s flagship platforms, Facebook and Instagram, experienced a massive, widespread service disruption. The outage, which began shortly after 9:30 a.m. ET, left users unable to access their feeds, send messages, or even log into their accounts.

The disruption caused significant frustration for personal users and businesses alike. Reports on outage-tracking platforms surged quickly, with Facebook alone seeing over 132,000 incident reports by 9:50 a.m. ET. Many users discovered they had been abruptly logged out of their mobile apps and desktop browsers. Upon trying to re-authenticate, they were greeted by generic error messages stating that something went wrong and that the team was working on a fix.

Instagram users faced a similar experience, with many reporting “could not refresh feed” errors. While some individuals managed to see a partial feed, attempts to navigate to specific profiles, search for users, or view Stories resulted in loading failures. The trouble also extended to Facebook Messenger, further isolating people who rely on these tools for daily communication.

Data suggests the problem was global in scale. Reports poured in from across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Australia. This widespread reach points to a major server-side failure rather than an isolated issue with local internet providers or specific smartphone models. By late morning, some users began to see improvements as the number of error reports started to drop, though many remained unable to access full functionality.

Meta’s official channels confirmed they were aware of the situation. Andy Stone, the company’s Vice President of Communications, posted on X acknowledging that people were having trouble accessing their services. Despite this, the company did not immediately disclose the root cause of the technical failure or provide a specific timeline for when all services would return to 100% capacity.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how deeply integrated these platforms have become in global infrastructure. For many, the downtime was more than a minor inconvenience; it disrupted scheduled marketing campaigns, professional communication, and social connectivity. As systems began to stabilize, the focus shifted to how such a massive failure occurred and what steps Meta will take to prevent similar outages in the future.
