China’s internet watchdog has told ByteDance’s video editing apps, Jianying and Maoxiang, and its website, Jimeng AI, to follow rules about labeling content made by artificial intelligence. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced this on Tuesday.

The CAC stated that these three platforms failed to properly put in place the required steps for identifying AI-generated content. This means they broke China’s cybersecurity law and related rules. Authorities called in the people in charge, ordered them to fix the issues, warned them, and handed out penalties. The statement did not give specific details about the punishments.

Platforms must strictly follow legal rules for labeling AI content, the CAC emphasized. They added that regulators will keep a close eye on things to “truly protect the public interest and support the healthy and orderly growth of AI.” China first introduced rules for labeling AI-generated content in March 2025, and these rules became active in September of that year.

This move shows China’s serious approach to controlling AI technology and its output. The government wants to make sure people can tell the difference between content made by humans and content made by AI. This helps prevent confusion and the spread of misleading information.

The crackdown on ByteDance’s platforms, which are widely used for video creation and editing, sends a clear message to other tech companies operating in China. They must prioritize compliance with AI content regulations. This is part of China’s broader effort to manage the rapid development of AI within its borders.

By enforcing these rules, China aims to balance innovation in AI with public safety and trust. The government believes that clear labeling is crucial for maintaining a healthy online environment as AI tools become more advanced and accessible. This action against ByteDance highlights the government’s commitment to these principles.
