GMI Cloud, a U.S.-based cloud services provider, announced on Monday a significant investment in Taiwan. The company plans to construct a $500 million artificial intelligence data center on the island, with key support from American chipmaker Nvidia. This new facility aims to boost Taiwan’s AI development and will begin operations by March 2026.

The advanced data center will feature Nvidia’s latest Blackwell GB300 chips. It will house approximately 7,000 GPUs across 96 high-density racks. This powerful setup will allow the center to process nearly 2 million tokens per second and will require about 16 megawatts of power.

Alex Yeh, Founder and CEO of GMI Cloud, emphasized the growing need for more data centers in Taiwan, calling them “strategic assets” for the island’s AI future. He believes Taiwan can overcome any power-supply issues. Yeh noted the strong demand for AI, mentioning that GMI Cloud’s current GPU usage is “almost full.” He stated, “You want to promote local ecosystems – you have to build the data center first, you have to build the AI cluster first.”

This project comes at a time when major technology companies worldwide are spending billions on AI infrastructure to handle increasing workloads. This trend has greatly benefited semiconductor companies like Nvidia, which earns most of its revenue from these sales. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has previously referred to such large computing clusters as “AI factories.” In the past year, Nvidia has also secured deals to supply its advanced GPUs for projects in Saudi Arabia and South Korea. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to reserve top AI semiconductors, such as Nvidia’s Blackwell chips, for American companies.

Other notable AI infrastructure projects recently announced in Taiwan include a 100-megawatt AI data center, a collaboration between Foxconn and Nvidia, revealed in May. GMI Cloud, which offers GPU-as-a-Service and is one of Nvidia’s cloud partners, already runs data centers in several countries, including the United States, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan. Beyond this Taiwan venture, GMI Cloud plans another 50-megawatt data center in the U.S. and aims to go public within the next two to three years.

Yeh expects the Taiwan AI factory, once fully operational, to generate approximately $1 billion in total contract value. Initial customers for this facility include Nvidia itself, cybersecurity firm Trend Micro, electronics manufacturer Wistron, Chunghwa System Integration, data-infrastructure provider VAST Data, and industrial solutions firm TECO.
