Amazon has joined Microsoft in supporting new legislation aimed at restricting chipmaker Nvidia’s ability to sell advanced chips to China. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that Amazon’s cloud division has privately informed Senate staff of its backing for the bill, known as the GAIN AI Act. AI startup Anthropic also supports this legislation. The Guaranteeing Access and Innovation for National Artificial.
The Intelligence (GAIN) Act was introduced as part of the broader National Defense Authorization Act. This bill requires companies that make AI chips to prioritize orders from U.S. customers over those from international buyers.
Microsoft has publicly endorsed the legislation, stating its support for the measures. The move comes as Washington attempts to secure crucial AI technology for American use. There are growing concerns that China could use advanced AI capabilities to enhance its military power, leading to a push to prioritize domestic needs.
Nvidia, the leading global chipmaker, has previously expressed concerns about the GAIN AI Act. The company believes that such restrictions could hinder global competition for advanced chips and limit the computing power available to other countries worldwide.
However, not all major tech companies have taken a stance on the proposed Act. Meta Platforms and Alphabet’s Google have remained neutral on the issue. Similarly, US President Donald Trump has not yet publicly stated his position on the legislation. This new push from tech giants and lawmakers highlights the growing strategic importance of AI chip technology and its role in national security.
