Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping engaged in a phone conversation on Friday, marking their first known contact in three months. The call, initiated by the US side, focused heavily on finding a resolution to the ongoing TikTok saga and addressing broader trade tensions between the two economic superpowers. A potential agreement to allow TikTok to continue operating in the United States was a key element of the discussion, alongside a range of other significant trade disputes. Chinese state media confirmed the call, although details regarding the conversation remain scarce. The White House initially declined to comment.

The phone call coincided with ongoing preparations for a possible in-person summit between Trump and Xi at the upcoming APEC summit in South Korea. This summit offers a platform for further negotiations and the finalization of the TikTok deal. This deal, which has already been tentatively agreed upon, would involve transferring TikTok’s US operations to American owners, but retain the use of ByteDance’s algorithm—a point of concern for US lawmakers worried about potential national security implications. China, however, maintains that there is no evidence of a national security threat posed by the app.

Beyond TikTok, the leaders addressed a wide array of trade issues plaguing the relationship. These include competition in advanced technologies such as semiconductors, increased Chinese purchases of US agricultural products (including soybeans) and Boeing aircraft, as well as a demand for China to curb the export of fentanyl-related chemicals. The US has implemented tariffs as a key tool in its trade strategy, which has escalated tensions significantly earlier this year. While recent limited agreements have paused the escalating tariff war, significant hurdles remain.

Despite recent economic slowdowns in both countries, the phone call signifies a renewed effort to de-escalate tensions and forge a path towards more stable trade relations. However, the success of these efforts hinges on resolving numerous complex issues and gaining congressional approval for any agreements reached. The future of TikTok and the overall trajectory of U.S.-China relations remain uncertain but are clearly interwoven. The recent release of a detained Wells Fargo executive from China is a positive gesture before the call.
