President Donald Trump hosted a White House dinner with tech executives on Thursday, where he extended his congratulations to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and co-founder Sergey Brin on Alphabet’s recent victory in a landmark antitrust case. The Department of Justice had accused Google of holding an illegal monopoly in the internet search market. Still, Judge Amit Mehta ultimately ruled against the most severe penalties, resulting in a massive surge in Alphabet’s market capitalization—a $230 billion increase. Trump’s celebratory remarks to Pichai at the dinner highlighted the significant financial impact of the ruling.
Pichai, in response, expressed relief at the conclusion of the lengthy legal battle. He acknowledged the Trump administration’s role in fostering constructive dialogue, contributing to a resolution. The conversation then shifted to the critical importance of American leadership in the field of artificial intelligence. Pichai praised the administration’s “Winning the AI Race” initiative, emphasizing its potential to position the US at the forefront of AI development. He specifically highlighted the plan’s focus on innovation, infrastructure development, and international diplomacy related to AI.
However, the discussion also touched upon a separate ongoing legal matter. Trump brought up his lawsuit against YouTube, alleging unlawful censorship following the suspension of his accounts after the January 6th Capitol riot. This lawsuit, filed over four years ago, is currently under discussion between Trump’s legal team and representatives from Google. Adding a layer of complexity to the interaction, Trump incorrectly attributed the initiation of the antitrust lawsuit against Google to the Biden administration.
Earlier in the day, Pichai had attended a White House event focused on AI education, hosted by First Lady Melania Trump. The dinner conversation between Trump and Pichai highlighted the complex interplay between politics, technology, and ongoing legal battles within the tech industry.
