South Korea is planning a massive new 'energy expressway' to power its booming AI industry and support a major expansion of renewable energy.

South Korea is planning a massive new “energy expressway” to power its future. Officials announced the ambitious project on Wednesday, saying it’s needed to handle the huge new demand for electricity coming from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom and better to support renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

The project involves building a new, advanced power grid across the entire country using high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. In simple terms, this means they can send electricity over long distances with much less energy waste than traditional power lines. This is critical for connecting renewable energy sources, which are often located far from the cities that need the power.

The plan will roll out in stages. In the 2030s, the government will build the first part of the grid along the west coast, where many renewable energy projects are located. By the 2040s, they will extend it along the south and east coasts, creating a U-shaped power corridor that covers the whole nation. The government plans to expand the country’s total power lines by more than 30% by 2030 to make this happen.

An official compared the project’s potential impact to the opening of the Gyeongbu Expressway in 1970, a highway that completely transformed the country’s economy. They believe this new energy grid will have a similar impact on Korea’s industries and energy system.

The project is a key part of the government’s plan to more than double its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and move toward carbon neutrality. It’s a big bet on a future powered by AI and clean energy.
