Meta is discontinuing all political advertising in the European Union, effective October 2025. The company blamed the EU’s tough new transparency rules, calling them “unworkable” and forcing it to make a “difficult decision.” It means users on Facebook, Instagram, and its other platforms in the EU will no longer see ads about politics, elections, or social issues.

The EU has created these new rules to combat foreign interference in elections and prevent the spread of misinformation that could influence voters. The regulations require greater transparency about who is paying for ads and impose strict limits on how personal data can be used for targeting purposes. But Meta argues these rules create an “untenable level of complexity” and threaten its business model, which relies on personalized advertising.

Meta says the decision means its users will now see fewer relevant ads. The company stressed that this ban only applies to paid advertising. People and politicians in the EU can still post and discuss political content on their pages without incurring any costs.

Meta isn’t the first tech giant to make this move. Last year, Google also stopped serving political ads in the EU in response to the same regulatory pressures. The decision by Meta escalates the ongoing battle between Big Tech companies and European regulators, who are determined to rein in their power and influence.
