Microsoft plans to reduce its U.S. workforce through its first-ever voluntary buyout program. This program will reportedly be offered to U.S. employees at “the senior director level and below whose years of employment and age add up to 70 or higher.” It could affect up to 7 percent of the company’s U.S. workforce.

As of June 2025, Microsoft had around 125,000 employees in the U.S. This means up to 8,750 individuals could be offered a paid exit when the program begins in May. While this number is smaller than the roughly 15,000 employees the company laid off in May and July of 2025, it is still significant, especially if many eligible employees choose to take the buyout.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief people officer, shared in a memo seen, “Our hope is that this program gives those eligible the choice to take that next step on their own terms, with generous company support.”

Microsoft’s 2025 layoffs aimed to streamline management layers and its video game business. However, these new reductions may be more closely linked to the company’s aggressive investments in artificial intelligence. It’s not necessarily that AI tools are making employees redundant, but rather that Microsoft continues to spend heavily on building AI infrastructure. The company reported spending $37.5 billion in capital expenditures during Q2 2026, with a large portion going toward expanding its data centers.

This strategic move suggests Microsoft is reallocating resources to support its growing AI ambitions, which require substantial investment in new technologies and infrastructure.
