Microsoft has confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday that it is shutting down Outlook Lite on May 26. Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was a stripped-down version of the standard Outlook app. It was specifically made for Android phones that had less storage space and for areas with slower internet connections.
The app’s retirement was already in the pipeline. Last year, Microsoft announced that it would remove Outlook Lite from the Google Play Store in October 2025. Now, the company has stated that existing users will lose access to the app’s functions next month.
Microsoft suggests users switch to the main Outlook Mobile app for a continued “secure and feature-rich email experience,” according to an Outlook Lite support page.
Outlook Lite users will still be able to get to their emails, calendar items, and attachments. They just need to sign in to the regular Outlook Mobile app. Users will also see prompts directing them to the Google Play Store to download the standard Outlook app.
This move seems to streamline Microsoft’s offerings and focus its development efforts on a single, more robust platform. While convenient for some, the shutdown might pose a challenge for users who relied on the Lite version due to device limitations or poor network conditions.
