OpenAI just launched a surprise update that brings ChatGPT directly to your car’s dashboard. If you have an iPhone and a vehicle that supports Apple CarPlay, you can now chat with the AI while you drive. This move puts one of the world’s most popular AI tools right in front of millions of drivers, turning a boring commute into a chance to have a deep conversation.
Getting it set up is simple enough. You just need to make sure your iPhone and the ChatGPT app are fully updated to the latest versions. Once you connect your phone to your car, you’ll see the familiar ChatGPT icon on the dashboard screen. Tapping “New voice chat” opens the door to the AI’s voice mode, and once it says it’s listening, you’re ready to go.
There are a few big catches you should know about, though. The most important one is that ChatGPT doesn’t actually have any power over your car. It cannot adjust the air conditioning, roll down the windows, or skip to the next song on your playlist. For those specific tasks, you are still going to need to use Siri, as Apple keeps those car controls locked down for its own assistant.
You also won’t be able to start a conversation just by saying a “wake word.” Because of Apple’s strict rules, you can’t just say “Hey ChatGPT” to get it started while your hands are on the wheel. You have to actually touch the screen to open the app or select a saved chat. This means it isn’t quite as hands-free as people might have hoped, but it still works well once the chat is actually running.
So, why would you want to talk to an AI while driving? OpenAI suggests using the time to brainstorm new business ideas, get quick advice on a project, or even practice speaking a foreign language. It is basically like having a super-intelligent passenger who never gets tired of answering your questions or helping you think through a problem during a long trip.
While most people might still stick to their favorite podcasts or music, this update shows that OpenAI wants to be everywhere you go. It is a clever way to make the most of your time in traffic, even if the tech isn’t yet fully integrated with the car itself. Just remember to keep your eyes on the road while you are chatting away with your new digital co-pilot.
