Alibaba, the Chinese tech giant, just showed off its newest chip, the XuanTie C950. This 5-nanometer processor was revealed at an internal conference on Tuesday, as Alibaba gets ready for the big shift towards “agentic AI.”
Local media reports say this server chip runs at 3.2 GHz and uses the open-source RISC-V chip design. At the conference, hosted by Alibaba’s research arm, DAMO Academy, they called it “the highest performing RISC-V CPU in the world.”
The new XuanTie C950 is seriously fast, reportedly more than three times quicker than its older sibling, the XuanTie C920. Alibaba didn’t say which factory actually made the chip. The company hasn’t responded to requests for comment yet.
Alibaba is really ramping up its own chip development through its semiconductor division, T-Head. They’re mainly focusing on the Zhenwu 810E chip series for training and running AI models, while the XuanTie series is all about powerful cloud systems and agentic AI.
This new chip comes right after Alibaba launched Wukong last week. Wukong is an enterprise platform specifically designed for AI agent workflows, helping companies in China use AI more effectively. They also launched its international version, Accio Work, on Monday. This agentic AI platform claims it can automatically handle complex business tasks for small and medium-sized businesses.
Earlier this month, Alibaba also reshuffled some of its AI teams into a new group called Alibaba Token Hub. This new hub is all about building AI work platforms for businesses.
This change in strategy is happening because Alibaba is looking for new ways to make money. The prices for Chinese AI models have dropped a lot due to strong competition within the country, making it harder to turn a profit. By creating its own advanced chips and platforms for agentic AI, Alibaba hopes to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving AI market.
