YouTube announced on Tuesday that it has paid out over $100 billion to creators, artists, and media companies since 2021. This significant milestone reflects the platform’s continued growth and its increasingly vital role in the global media landscape. The surge in payouts is partly attributed to the rising popularity of YouTube on connected TVs, with a notable 45% year-over-year increase in channels earning over $100,000 from this viewing source. This success underscores YouTube’s expanding reach and its ability to generate substantial revenue for content creators.

The announcement was made during YouTube’s annual Made on YouTube event in New York City, coinciding with the platform’s 20th anniversary. Chief Product Officer Johanna Voolich highlighted the transformative power of creators in shaping culture and entertainment, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to supporting their innovative work. Along with the payout announcement, YouTube unveiled a suite of new creator tools designed to enhance video production and expand creative possibilities.

These new tools leverage artificial intelligence to streamline the editing process for YouTube Shorts, the platform’s short-form video offering. Creators can now utilize AI to transform raw footage into polished clips, complete with music, transitions, and voiceovers. A particularly innovative feature allows creators to convert dialogue from eligible videos into original songs for use in their Shorts. Furthermore, Google’s advanced AI video generator, Veo 3, will also be integrated into the Shorts platform.

The integration of Veo 3, while innovative, sparked some controversy earlier this year when CNBC reported that Google uses a subset of YouTube videos to train the AI, raising concerns amongst some creators. Despite this, YouTube celebrated its two-decade milestone by highlighting the vast amount of content hosted on the platform, including over 20 billion videos spanning various formats such as music, Shorts, and podcasts. This remarkable achievement cements YouTube’s position as a dominant force in the digital media world and a significant source of income for countless creators.
