If you’ve ever signed up for a new social media app and felt lost because you didn’t know who to follow, X is trying to solve that. The company just announced a new feature called “Starterpacks.” These are pre-made lists of accounts that new users can follow right away based on their specific interests.

X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said the team searched the entire platform to find the top posters in every niche and country. They then put these people into lists so new users can find the best accounts to follow immediately, whether those creators are famous or just starting to get noticed.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because X is following a trend set by its rivals. Bluesky launched its own version of “starter packs” back in 2024. However, there is a key difference between the two. On Bluesky, regular users make and share their own lists of up to 50 accounts. On X, the company is doing all the curating itself.

X isn’t the only one borrowing this idea. Meta’s Threads app launched a similar tool late in 2024, showing recommended profiles directly in the feeds of new sign-ups. Mastodon also joined the party in 2025, though it gives its users the freedom to choose whether to be included in these lists.

The goal for all these apps is the same: make sure new users have something interesting to look at the moment they open the app. By handing people a list of great accounts to follow, X hopes to keep people from getting bored and leaving the platform before they really get started. You can expect to see these packs popping up on the platform over the next few weeks.
