With flagship smartphones costing around $1,200, many people look for a good phone that balances features and price. These phones offer solid performance without breaking the bank. Apple’s new iPhone 17e and Google’s Pixel 10a are strong contenders in this space.

The iPhone 17e, priced at $599, offers a 48MP Fusion camera, MagSafe charging, a Super Retina XDR display, the A19 chip, and 256GB of storage. For iPhone fans, this looks like an exciting and affordable choice.

However, if you look beyond brand loyalty and focus purely on getting the most for your money, the Google Pixel 10a also makes a strong case. Neither phone has a review out yet, but the Pixel 10a appears to have an edge in a few important areas.

First, the Pixel 10a has a slightly larger 6.3-inch screen compared to the iPhone 17e’s 6.1 inches. While the iPhone’s 2532×1170 Super Retina XDR OLED screen has a slightly higher resolution, the Pixel 10a’s 2424×1080 OLED display is still very good. A big difference is brightness: the iPhone 17e maxes out at 1200 nits, while the Pixel 10a can reach an impressive 3000 nits.

Both phones feature a 48MP main camera. However, the Pixel 10a adds a 13MP ultrawide camera on the back. This extra lens gives users more options for dramatic wide-angle photos, which is a significant bonus.

The Google Pixel 10a also comes with Gemini intelligence built-in, which currently surpasses Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 17e. Gemini on the Pixel 10a can answer questions, use Gemini Live to help you understand your surroundings, and create and edit images. It even includes a camera coach to improve your photography skills. The iPhone 17e, running iOS 26, only offers photo cleanup and basic ChatGPT integration, though Gemini is expected to come to Siri later.

Another unique feature of the Pixel 10a is its completely flat design. It has no camera bump, so it lies flat on a table and feels smooth in your pocket. The iPhone 17e, despite having only one camera, still has a small raised edge around it.

Of course, the iPhone 17e has its own advantages. It boasts Apple’s latest A19 chip, which means top-tier performance. The Pixel 10a uses last year’s Tensor G4, which is fast but not the absolute latest.

The iPhone 17e also supports MagSafe, allowing it to snap onto MagSafe accessories and charge wirelessly at a speedy 15W. The Pixel 10a, unlike other Pixel 10 models, missed out on the new Pixel Snap feature. Finally, the cheaper Pixel 10a comes with half the storage. To get 256GB, you’d pay $599 for the Pixel 10a, the same price as the iPhone 17e.
