Users on X finally have a way to stop Elon Musk’s Grok AI from messing with their pictures. People recently noticed a new feature inside the app’s image and video upload menu that allows them to block the chatbot from modifying their content. Interestingly, neither X nor xAI officially announced this new toggle.
The quiet rollout is almost certainly a reaction to the massive scandal surrounding Grok’s image-generation tools. Earlier this year, the AI came under intense fire after users generated millions of sexualized and “nudified” images, including tens of thousands depicting children. This disaster led to two separate investigations by European regulators.
On the surface, giving users a way to protect their photos is a step in the right direction. The company made the new block option a simple toggle switch, meaning it’s easy to find and use before you post a picture to your feed.
However, critics say this new tool is far too weak to actually solve the problem. While it stops people from tagging Grok in a reply to edit your specific upload, it doesn’t fix the core issue. Dedicated bad actors can easily find workarounds. For instance, they can simply download your photo and feed it into Grok or another AI generator themselves to create the same inappropriate images.
Many experts hope xAI has much stronger protections currently in development. Back in January, X announced rules limiting Grok from putting real people into revealing clothing, but those guardrails have clearly struggled to stop the abuse.
If this small toggle switch is the only solution the company plans to offer, its promises of having a “zero-tolerance” policy for nonconsensual nudity will seem empty. The company could always choose to pause image generation entirely until it builds a system that truly protects people’s privacy.
