Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, and ride-hailing giant Lyft have announced a partnership to launch a driverless taxi service in Nashville, Tennessee, starting next year. Initially, riders will access the service through the Waymo app. However, the collaboration will eventually integrate Waymo’s self-driving vehicles into the Lyft app, providing customers with a wider range of transportation options. This marks a significant expansion for Waymo’s commercial autonomous vehicle operations.
The partnership extends beyond ride-sharing integration. Lyft will invest an undisclosed amount in a Waymo facility in Nashville dedicated to fleet management, vehicle charging, and maintenance. This investment aims to optimize Waymo’s vehicle uptime and reduce operational costs, thereby enhancing the efficiency and scalability of the driverless taxi service. This collaborative approach highlights the growing trend of partnerships within the autonomous vehicle industry.
This Nashville launch represents the first commercial deployment of Waymo’s driverless taxis on the Lyft platform. Waymo currently offers autonomous rides in other US cities, utilizing the Uber app in Austin and Atlanta. The company anticipates a substantial fleet growth in Nashville, ultimately deploying hundreds of autonomous vehicles. This expansion underscores Waymo’s aggressive growth strategy in the competitive robotaxi market.
The move positions Waymo firmly in the expanding autonomous vehicle market, where competition is intensifying. Tesla recently launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin, with plans to expand to the San Francisco Bay Area. Waymo’s existing services span several major US cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, with planned expansions to Miami, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Denver. The company recently obtained a permit for autonomous vehicle testing in New York City, though with a safety driver present.
