Spotify wants to turn your average playlist into a smooth, professional-sounding DJ set. The streaming giant is rolling out a new feature called Smart Reorder, designed to make the jump from one song to the next feel effortless.
Available only to Premium subscribers, this new tool looks at the musical key and the tempo, or beats per minute (BPM), of every track in your list. It then shuffles them into a specific order where the music flows naturally, preventing jarring changes in speed or mood between songs.
This update builds on a similar feature released last August that allowed listeners to create custom transitions. While that update helped eliminate awkward silences, users still had to figure out which songs sounded good next to each other. This new update takes that guesswork out of the equation entirely. Instead of manually dragging songs around to find the right vibe, the app handles the technical side of things.
Using the feature is straightforward. If you pay for a subscription, just open one of your playlists and tap the “Mix” option. From there, hit the “Edit” button and scroll down until you see “Smart Reorder.” One tap rearranges the list instantly.
Once you click save, the new order locks in. The goal is to keep the energy consistent, whether you are working out, studying, or hosting a party. It mimics what professional DJs do when they match beats to keep a dance floor moving without stopping the music.
People clearly enjoy the concept of seamless listening. Spotify noted that fans have already streamed over 220 hours of these mixed playlists since the custom transition tools arrived last year.
The company even shared some specific song pairings that users love. Some of the most popular smooth transitions on the platform include moving from The Weeknd’s “Wake Me Up” into “After Hours,” or sliding from Flo Rida’s “Low” right into Rihanna’s “S&M.”
