Sony is closing Bluepoint Games, the studio famous for its high-quality remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. The decision will affect roughly 70 employees who will lose their jobs when the studio officially shuts its doors in March.

Sony confirmed the closure to Bloomberg, stating it followed a recent “business review.” In a statement, the company praised Bluepoint as an “incredibly talented team” and thanked them for their contribution to the PlayStation community. However, this praise offers little comfort to the staff facing unemployment.

Bluepoint had a strong reputation for technical excellence. The studio originally joined the PlayStation family in 2021, and its last major release was co-developing the massive hit God of War: Ragnarok in 2022. At the time of the acquisition, Sony seemingly viewed the team as a vital asset for remastering its classic catalog.

Things apparently changed when Sony pushed the studio toward multiplayer gaming. Reports indicate Bluepoint was working on a live-service game set in the God of War universe. Sony canceled that project in 2025, alongside a title from Bend Studio.

This closure fits a messy pattern in Sony’s recent history. The company has struggled to pivot from single-player hits to online “games as a service.” This strategy previously led to the disastrous launch of Concord, which Sony pulled offline after just two weeks, followed by the closure of its developer, Firewalk Studios.

While Bluepoint is gone, Sony is still trying to make online games work elsewhere. Guerrilla Games is developing an online Horizon project, and Bungie is preparing to launch its extraction shooter Marathon in March. Unfortunately for Bluepoint, Sony’s shifting strategies left no room for the studio to survive.
