SK Hynix, a South Korean semiconductor giant, announced the completion of its High Bandwidth Memory 4 (HBM4) development and is gearing up for mass production. The demand for high-bandwidth memory has skyrocketed in tandem with the rapid growth of AI workloads. Data centers, facing growing concerns about energy consumption, are actively seeking more efficient solutions. HBM4 addresses these needs directly. By doubling the number of I/O connections compared to its predecessor and improving power efficiency by over 40%, HBM4 delivers substantial performance gains. SK Hynix claims that this translates to a service performance improvement of up to 69%, optimizing data center throughput while minimizing energy usage.
SK Hynix’s HBM4 surpasses the industry standard operating speed set by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) by exceeding 10 Gbps, compared to the 8 Gbps standard. This enhanced performance is attributed to the company’s advanced manufacturing processes. The implementation of the MR-MUF (Modified Multi-layered Through-Silicon Via) process enhances heat dissipation and stability, while the utilization of 1αnm process technology minimizes manufacturing risks and improves yield.
Executives at SK Hynix expressed their confidence in the technology’s market impact.
