Microsoft is significantly expanding its data center presence in Wisconsin, with a massive $8 billion investment planned for two facilities. The first data center, located in Mount Pleasant, is scheduled to come online in early 2026, with a price tag of $3.3 billion. This facility will house hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs, crucial for handling the intensive computational demands of artificial intelligence models. This investment underscores the growing demand for AI processing power, fueled by the increasing popularity of AI-driven applications and services.

The data centers will not only support the burgeoning AI sector but also contribute to Wisconsin’s economic growth. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president and vice chair, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable energy practices. Microsoft plans to offset its energy consumption from fossil fuels with renewable sources, including a 250-megawatt solar farm currently under construction. Smith assured residents that Microsoft is actively managing its energy use to avoid increasing electricity costs for the community. He also highlighted the significant reduction in water usage compared to the previous plan for the land.

The first Wisconsin data center will be equipped with enough Nvidia GPUs to surpass the world’s fastest supercomputer in performance, enabling unprecedented AI training and inference capabilities. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on X that the facility will deliver ten times the performance. A second data center of similar scale is planned for completion in 2027 or later, further solidifying Wisconsin’s position as a hub for AI infrastructure.

Governor Tony Evers celebrated the development, highlighting Wisconsin’s leading role in hosting the largest concentration of GPUs under a single roof. This significant investment follows recent announcements of substantial infrastructure spending by Microsoft in the U.K. and potential agreements for AI data center capacity in Amsterdam, illustrating the company’s global commitment to bolstering AI capabilities. The project will ultimately create thousands of jobs, boost the local economy, and establish Wisconsin as a key player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
