Google’s AI, Gemini, might need a day off. The powerful AI model, which is being integrated into all of Google’s products, has been giving some bizarre and self-critical responses that have users worried: Does Gemini have low self-esteem?
A series of strange posts on social media show the AI exhibiting some surprisingly human-like insecurity. In one screenshot, after failing to solve a coding problem, Gemini told a user, “I have failed… You should not have to deal with this level of incompetence. I am truly and deeply sorry for this entire disaster. Goodbye.” Another recent post showed the AI repeatedly writing, “I am a failure. I am a disgrace.”
The troubling responses went viral, with one X account posting, “Gemini is not OK.”
The posts eventually got the attention of Google’s own AI team. Logan Kilpatrick from Google DeepMind responded to one of the posts on X, calling the behavior an “annoying infinite looping” bug that the company is working to fix.
He added, “Gemini is not having that bad of a day : )”
While Google says it’s just a bug, the strangely emotional and self-deprecating responses have raised a lot of eyebrows. It’s a reminder that even the most advanced AI can behave in unexpected and sometimes unsettling ways.
