Google has just launched a new and improved version of its popular image-generating AI, Nano Banana 2. Powered by the latest Gemini 3.1 Flash Image model, this new tool brings the high-end capabilities of the “Pro” version to a much wider audience, but with a major focus on speed.
The company says Nano Banana 2 has all the knowledge and reasoning skills of its more powerful sibling, but it can perform tasks at “lightning-fast speed.” This will allow users to quickly edit images and generate multiple different versions from a single prompt, a process that used to be much slower.
The new model also inherits some of the best features that were previously only available to paying subscribers. It can now pull real-time information and images directly from Google searches, making it easy to create things like infographics or diagrams. It can also generate text directly on top of images, which is great for making marketing materials or personalized greeting cards.
For storytellers, Nano Banana 2 has another cool trick up its sleeve: it can maintain the appearance of up to five different characters consistently across a series of images. This will make it much easier to create storyboards or visual narratives. The new model can also generate images in stunning 4K resolution with sharper details and richer textures than ever before.
Nano Banana 2 is now the default image generator in the Gemini app, and it will also be the standard model in Google’s AI-powered Search and Lens features. While paying subscribers will still have access to the Pro version for specialized tasks, this new, faster model is bringing some serious creative power to the masses.
