Google is putting its new Gemini AI assistant everywhere, and now it’s making its way into Google Maps. This upgrade means you can talk to the Maps app naturally, keeping your hands on the wheel while you navigate.

Imagine driving and asking, “Is there a good, cheap Japanese restaurant along my route within a couple of miles?” Gemini will find options and answer. You can then ask more questions, like whether a specific restaurant has parking or what dishes people like there. Once you pick a spot, say, “Okay, let’s go there,” and Maps starts guiding you.

Gemini can also handle other quick tasks without you leaving the Maps app. For example, if you allow it to connect, you can ask Gemini to add events to your Calendar while you’re navigating. Reporting traffic problems becomes much easier as well. Say things like, “there’s flooding ahead” or “I see an accident,” and Gemini takes care of it.

This new Gemini integration is rolling out over the next few weeks for both Android and iOS users in all areas where Gemini is available. Android Auto will also get this smart assistant in the future. For people in the US, Google Maps is getting even more helpful features thanks to Gemini. Directions will now include easy-to-spot landmarks. Instead of hearing “turn left in 500 feet,” Gemini might tell you to “turn left after the Thai Siam Restaurant.” Maps will even highlight that landmark on your screen so you can see it clearly. This feature is also coming to Android and iOS devices.

Additionally, Android users will now get early warnings about road problems, even if they aren’t actively using navigation. And later this month, Lens will team up with Gemini inside the Maps app for both Android and iOS. You tap the camera in the Maps search bar, point it at a building, and ask questions like, “What is this place and why is it popular?” This makes it even easier to explore and gather information about your surroundings.
