Google is giving its popular Maps app a major upgrade, adding new AI features powered by its Gemini models. This update promises to make driving and navigating much easier and more intuitive.

The biggest change is the new “Immersive Navigation” mode. Instead of the usual flat, 2D map, Maps will now show your surroundings in 3D. This means you’ll see buildings and overpasses with more depth, helping you get your bearings faster, especially in unfamiliar areas.

Gemini AI works behind the scenes to make this possible. It uses data from Street View and aerial photos to render the environment, highlighting important things like crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs. This should help drivers avoid missing turns or exits.

The voice directions are also getting an upgrade. They’ll sound more natural, giving you helpful cues like “go past this exit and take the next one.” This will be super handy, especially when driving in other countries where road names might be tough to pronounce.

Maps will also be smarter about alternative routes. If it suggests a different way to go, it will explain why, like telling you a route might be longer but have less traffic. Before you even leave, you can get a Street View preview of your destination and parking suggestions.

Google is also adding a chatbot to Maps called “Ask Maps.” You can tap an icon, type a question, and Gemini will use all the information in Maps to give you a personalized answer.

This means you can ask things like, “Find a place where I can charge my phone and get a coffee without a long wait.” Gemini will pull up options, even remembering places you’ve searched for or saved before. You can then easily book restaurants or save locations right from the results.

The immersive driving experience is rolling out now in the US for Android, iOS, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in. “Ask Maps” is also available in the US and India for Android and iOS, with a desktop version coming soon. These updates mark a significant step forward for Google Maps, making it a more intelligent and helpful co-pilot for your journeys.
