Google has rolled out a new app for Windows desktops, and it heavily features artificial intelligence. If you’re not a fan of Google’s Gemini chatbot, then this download isn’t for you. However, for those who use Gemini often, this app could offer a more streamlined and integrated experience on their Windows computers.

Once you install the app, you can bring up its search bar using the Alt + Space shortcut. You can type queries into this flexible search box to find information from the web, just like a regular Google search. In this “AI Mode,” an extra layer of artificial intelligence will be available for follow-up questions or to explore topics in more detail. But the app isn’t limited to just web searches. It can also search through your computer’s files, other installed applications, or your Google Drive files to find information. Screen sharing is also part of the app, letting you use Google Lens to perform AI-powered searches on content displayed on your monitor.

The app is launching globally today, available in English. Interestingly, it’s not restricted to the very latest Windows 11; it only requires a machine running at least Windows 10. This broad compatibility means more users can access the new AI features.

This new app marks Google’s continued push to integrate AI directly into everyday computing. By making Gemini easily accessible with a keyboard shortcut and allowing it to interact with both online and local data, Google aims to make AI a central part of the Windows user experience. It positions Gemini as a versatile assistant capable of handling a wide range of information retrieval and analytical tasks, directly from the desktop.

The ability to search local files and integrate with Google Drive adds a significant layer of functionality beyond typical web search tools. Furthermore, the inclusion of Google Lens for screen content searches demonstrates a powerful step towards contextual AI assistance, allowing users to get information about anything on their screen instantly. This could change how people research, organize, and interact with their digital environment.
