Apple has fallen behind in the AI chatbot race, but the company is quietly building its in-house alternative to ChatGPT. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple created a new team earlier this year tasked with developing a “stripped-down rival to ChatGPT.”

This is a major change in strategy for Apple. Just last year, the company announced a partnership with OpenAI to power its Siri assistant with ChatGPT, a move that suggested Apple wasn’t interested in building its AI from scratch. But now, the company has had a change of heart.

The new team, reportedly called “Answers, Knowledge and Information,” is developing an in-house AI that can crawl the web to answer questions. This new technology could become a standalone app, but it’s also expected to power up Apple’s existing services like Siri, Spotlight search, and the Safari browser. The team, reportedly led by a former Siri executive, is actively hiring people with experience in search engine development.

Apple has had some struggles with AI. The company recently announced it was delaying the release of its revamped Siri, and its “Apple Intelligence” program has been slow to get off the ground. But this new effort shows Apple is serious about catching up. During the company’s latest earnings call, CEO Tim Cook even said he was open to buying another company to speed up Apple’s AI development.
