In a move widely seen as a publicity stunt, AI startup Perplexity has made a $34.5 billion bid to buy Google's Chrome browser.

Samsung is teaming up with the AI search startup Perplexity to bring the company’s search engine to its smart TVs. Starting today, if you own a 2025 Samsung TV, you can download and use the new Perplexity app. The feature will also be coming to older 2024 and 2023 models later this year. To sweeten the deal, Perplexity is offering a free one-year subscription to its Pro plan to anyone who downloads the new app.

Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine that provides direct, simple answers to questions. This feature was quite new and exciting before giants like Google and OpenAI added similar capabilities to their products. The new app on Samsung TVs will let you ask questions using either your voice or by typing.

But this partnership is a head-scratcher. Perplexity has a pretty shaky reputation, even for the wild west of the AI industry. Just a few months ago, the web security firm Cloudflare accused the company of secretly scraping websites that it wasn’t supposed to. On top of that, Perplexity is currently being sued for copyright infringement by two of Japan’s biggest media companies and the famous dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster. They all claim that the AI not only stole their content but also fabricated false information and attributed it to them.

Despite the controversies, Samsung is moving forward with the partnership, giving the embattled AI startup a huge new platform and a powerful new ally.
