Apple and other foreign smartphone makers just scored a massive win in the Chinese market. New data released on Thursday shows a dramatic surge in demand for non-Chinese devices. According to the latest government figures, shipments of foreign-branded mobile phones more than doubled in November compared to the same time last year.
Calculations based on the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology report reveal a staggering 128.4% increase in these shipments. While the report tracks all foreign brands, Apple’s iPhone traditionally dominates this category in China, making this a clear indicator of the tech giant’s recent success in the region.
The numbers tell an interesting story about what Chinese consumers are buying right now. The academy reported that total phone shipments in the country reached 30.16 million units for the month. This represents an overall year-on-year increase of just 1.9%. When you look at the breakdown, foreign brands accounted for 6.93 million of those units.
This data highlights a significant shift in market dynamics for November. Since the overall market grew by only a small margin—less than 2%—while foreign shipments skyrocketed by over 128%, this suggests that international brands drove almost all the growth in the sector. In fact, the math indicates that while companies like Apple saw their numbers explode, domestic Chinese phone makers likely saw a dip in their sales volume compared to last year.
For Apple and its investors, this is welcome news. The Chinese market is intensely competitive, with local rivals constantly pushing new technology and aggressive pricing. Seeing such a sharp rise in shipments suggests that recent strategies, likely including price adjustments or strong demand for the newest models, are paying off. While the broader smartphone market in China is seeing only slow, steady growth, the appetite for foreign devices has clearly roared back to life, creating a bright spot for international companies navigating the world’s largest smartphone arena.
