Arm is appealing a court ruling that sided with Qualcomm, continuing the high-stakes legal battle between the two chip giants over technology licensing.

The legal battle between the two chip giants, Arm and Qualcomm, is not over yet. Arm announced on Tuesday that it plans to appeal a recent court ruling that handed Qualcomm a major victory in its ongoing licensing dispute.

The fight is over whether Qualcomm’s subsidiary, Nuvia, had the right to use ARM’s technology in its computer processor designs. Last year, a jury in a U.S. federal court ruled in favor of Qualcomm, finding that the chips were properly licensed. Arm then asked the judge to either set aside the verdict or order a new trial, but the judge denied both requests, leaving Qualcomm’s victory intact.

Now, Arm is taking the fight to a higher court. “Arm remains confident in its position… and will immediately file an appeal seeking to overturn the judgment,” the company said in a statement.

Qualcomm, on the other hand, stated that the decision confirmed its long-held position that it had done nothing wrong. “Our right to innovate prevailed in this case, and we hope Arm will return to fair and competitive practices,” said Qualcomm’s general counsel.

The case is a high-stakes affair for the entire chip industry. ARM provides the core technology used in the chip designs of major companies, including Qualcomm, Apple, and MediaTek. The outcome of this legal battle could have a major impact on how these companies do business and innovate in the future.
