Apple is set to host its annual fall product launch on September 9th at its Cupertino headquarters. The event is highly anticipated, with the spotlight firmly on the new iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watch models. The biggest reveal is expected to be the surprisingly slim iPhone 17 Air.

The iPhone 17 Air, rumored to be a mere 5.5 millimeters thick—significantly slimmer than the standard iPhone 17 (7.8mm) and iPhone 17 Pro (8.3mm)—is generating considerable buzz. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests this ultra-thin design may involve compromises. A single wide-angle camera, instead of the dual or triple-camera systems found in other iPhone models, is anticipated, along with a smaller battery.

The potential impact on battery life, considering consumer preference for larger batteries and multiple camera lenses, remains a key concern. Industry analyst Nabila Popal of IDC points to the lukewarm reception of Samsung’s similarly slim Galaxy S25 Edge as a potential cautionary tale. However, Apple may be using the iPhone 17 Air as a testing ground for a future foldable iPhone, expected in 2026, much like Samsung’s strategy with the S25 Edge and its subsequent Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch.

Beyond the iPhone 17 Air, Apple is expected to unveil the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Air will replace the less popular iPhone Plus model. The iPhone 17 and 17 Air are expected to feature the new A19 processor, while the Pro models will utilize the more powerful A19 Pro chip. Upgrades for the Pro models may include enhanced telephoto lenses and a redesigned camera bump.

Further anticipated announcements include the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. While the Series 11 might see only minor processor upgrades, the Ultra 3 is rumored to include satellite messaging and a larger display. A new Apple Watch SE is also expected to be released. Finally, Apple may introduce AirPods 3 with heart rate tracking, mirroring a feature already present in their PowerBeats Pro 2 earbuds. Analysts predict price increases of $50 to $100 for the new iPhones.
