YouTube creators will now have a faster path to making money. On Wednesday, the company announced it’s lowering the subscriber requirement for its Shopping affiliate program from 1,000 to 500. This means more creators can start earning income earlier in their careers on the platform.

The Shopping affiliate program, which launched in 2022, allows creators to earn commissions when viewers purchase products that are tagged in their videos. This program applies to all types of YouTube content, including short-form videos (Shorts), on-demand videos (VOD), and Live streams. While the subscriber count has been reduced, creators will still need to meet the other requirements of the YouTube Partner Program to take advantage of these benefits.

It’s likely not a mere coincidence that this move from YouTube comes just one day after Meta introduced similar shopping links to its Reels feature. Now, creators on Facebook and Instagram can link up to 30 different products from various marketplace partners within a single video. This timing suggests an intensifying competition between major platforms to attract and retain creators by offering more monetization opportunities.

By lowering the barrier to entry for its affiliate program, YouTube is trying to empower a broader range of creators. This encourages them to produce more engaging content that can drive sales, ultimately benefiting both the creators and YouTube itself through increased commerce activity on the platform. It also helps creators to build a sustainable career on YouTube, potentially fostering a more vibrant and diverse creator ecosystem.
