For many of us, staying productive means finding a system that truly works. Some people thrive on detailed to-do lists and dedicated apps, while others prefer the structured approach of scheduling and planners. If you fall into the latter group, Google just rolled out a small but incredibly helpful update to its Workspace suite that will make a big difference in how you manage your time.

Google Calendar now lets you block specific time slots for specific tasks. Think of it as reserving a personal focus slot right on your calendar. This new feature goes beyond just creating a generic “work” block; it lets you define what you’re truly doing. You can add detailed descriptions to each task, ensuring you remember exactly what needs your attention during that time. Furthermore, you can control how these task blocks interact with your day by setting your own “do not disturb” and visibility preferences. This means fewer interruptions and a clearer view of your priorities.

This is a significant improvement over the old workaround, where people often resorted to scheduling “meetings with themselves” just to create a dedicated focus period for a specific assignment. Now, the process is seamless and purpose-built. It’s a thoughtful step Google took to acknowledge and support the need for deep, uninterrupted work, directly within the tool many already use daily for scheduling.

The rollout for this new feature began earlier in November for Google’s “Rapid Release” domains. If you’re on a “Standard Release” domain, you’ll see it gradually appear starting December 1. Once Google finishes the full rollout, everyone will have access to this option by default. It doesn’t matter if you’re a paying Google Workspace customer or simply using a personal Google account; this valuable new tool will be available to help you manage your productivity more effectively. This simple addition promises to help countless users carve out essential focus time, making it easier to tackle important assignments without distraction.
